A community tapestry

Are you more a maker than a talker? Are you a visual communicator? Would you prefer to channel your creativity energies outside the limelight? Perhaps you just have some hilarious/inspirational/educational artifacts (digital or analog) around that you think should be part of the N&N cultural tapestry.

Well, this is your lucky day! Threads aren’t just about giving talks and occupying center stage—there are other ways to help create the fabric of our society!

A literal community tapestry

Inspired by friends who invited guests to contribute pieces for a wedding quilt (like the one at left, used as the huppah in the Jewish ceremony), we invite you to help us piece together a visual representation of our community.

To adapt this tradition to our guests’ presumed constraints of time and textile-wrangling talents, we will construct a paper-based tapestry together on-site during the wedding weekend. To cater to our interest in hexagonal tesselation, we will use hexagonal tapestry pieces (see below for details).

Tapestry Preview / Contributing From Afar

We invite you to create a hexagon tile for the N&N tapestry—where the word create and its associated terms creative and creativity are the operative words.

For those attending the NNWW, there will be hexagon tiles and art supplies on site.

If you want to brainstorm ahead -- or if you can't attend but want to contribute -- we suggest that your hexagon:

  • represent YOU, in whatever way you’d like
  • express (perhaps schematically) what YOU bring to our community
  • express (perhaps schematically) your most salient connections to N&N

In other words, it’s all about YOU!

Alternatives:

  • If you're attending and you want to make a hexagon ahead of time: Our standard hexagon size is designed to fit on a US letter-sized page. Please use this sample template . You can, of course, affix items in any other shape that fits onto the standard hexagon.
  • Not coming? We would be thrilled for you to participate from afar!! You can contribute a PDF by clicking on the button at the bottom of the page.
    • Deadline for remote contributions: If you want us to print it out for you , it would be very helpful if you submit it by midnight, June 2/3.
  • Details, details...
    • Need more space? You may make multiple hexagons if you like! We aim to please!
    • Not a standard(s) kind of person? OK, we can accommodate iconoclasts too… somehow.

Loose threads

(AKA everything else: other digital or analog artifacts, virtual or tangible)

Do you have any hilarious photos or embarrassing videos you can dig up; a recipe, book, poem or quotation you think N&N would or should particularly appreciate? A puzzle you‘d like to construct, game to share, other non-hexagonal, non-tapestry-based artwork to display? Are you looking for an excuse to engage in wanton craftiness? We welcome all these loose threads too!

Quick clarification: The form linked above invites you to submit hexagon tiles ahead of time even if you're coming, and/or to let us know what you're planning to bring as far as tapestry contributions go. Our vision for the tapestry has been updated to a more spontaneous version, but the form has not likewise been updated. Please use it to submit hexa-tile PDFs if you yourself will not be there, or to submit digital loose threads.
